First lady Melania Trump drew criticism and mockery on social media after a report said she was busy doing a photo shoot during Wednesday's violent siege of the Capitol that left five people dead.

While thousands of pro-Trump supporters were storming the halls of Congress, the FLOTUS was overseeing a photo shoot, complete with professional lighting, at the White House, CNN reported, citing "a person familiar with the day's activities with the first lady."

"Photos were being taken of rugs and other items in the Executive Residence and the East Wing," the source said of the project of Trump, who, according to CNN, wants to write a coffee table book about decorative objects she has collected and had restored in the White House.

Social media users expressed their shock at Trump moving forward with the photo project despite the riots happening just blocks away.

"So glad #MelaniaTrump gets to spend time with #selfcare. Life has been so stressful for her. Who could begrudge her that while rampaging hordes overrun the Capitol and people are dying in droves?!" one person wrote.

"Not Melania having a whole photoshoot while the nation was being attacked," another tweeted, while a third user compared her to Marie Antoinette, writing, "Let them eat cake baby! - Melanie."

"She's prob working on her book: Un-Becoming," another user tweeted with laughing emoji, referring to Michelle Obama's 2018 memoir, "Becoming."

Some, however, were not surprised after hearing about Trump's whereabouts during Wednesday's events.

Several responded, "Of course she was." One person made a reference to her infamous green jacket, tweeting, "She doesn't care. Do U?"

Amid the backlash, many supporters also came to Trump's defense.

"I read that she is not in a good place mentally or emotionally right now to speak out. So it’s best to respect that and leave her alone. I’m sure she will issue a statement when she’s ready," one person wrote, referring to a White House source's statement to CNN that the first lady "just isn't in a place mentally or emotionally anymore where she wants to get involved."

"I am horrified by the assault on the Capitol. But for God's sake, what would you have her do? Drop everything and immediately go... where? The Capitol? The White House? Criticizing her for the photoshoot is just stupid," another user tweeted.

"How is it her fault?" another asked those who blamed and criticized the first lady.

"With all respect. She is not the President of the U.S. If there is anything she could be doing it would be swaying Trump from the chaos and incoherent actions - every day he does what he does, only endangers her family and those closest to her," another netizen said.

While Melania remained mum about the riot, both Ivanka Trump and her father President Donald Trump were active on social media at the time. However, Twitter decided to ban the president's personal account permanently Friday, citing "the risk of further incitement of violence."
