Who is the new Miss Universe? The top five during Sunday's pageant came down to Nia Sanchez of USA, Yasmin Verheijen of the Netherlands, Diana Harkusha of Ukraine, Kaci Fennell of Jamaica and Paulina Vega of Colombia.
Jamaica became the fourth runner up, followed by Netherlands as third runner up and Ukraine as second runner up. Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler passed on her crown to Paulina Vega. Colombia became the 63rd Miss Universe, beating out 87 other women at the Florida International University Arena in Doral-Miami.
Vega of Barranquilla, Colombia, just celebrated her 22nd birthday Jan. 15. The model has pageant blood in her veins, being the granddaughter of Miss Atlántico 1953 Elvira Castillo. But Vega’s not all good looks. She’s also a student at Universidad Javeriana in Bogota where she studies business administration.
The new Miss Universe is a “dreamer” who enjoys dancing, biking and hanging out at the beach. She comes from a big family that includes seven brothers and sisters. “Every birthday, ever dinner, every meal, every event is like a big party and very funny,” she explained of her close family.
Colombia’s win at the pageant doesn’t come as a surprise. According to her bio, she earned “the highest score possible in every presentation, 9.9.” Her crown marks the second win for Colombia, who first won the title in 1958.
“The day I won Miss Colombia, that moment changed my life completely,” she explained in a video interview about her title. “I traveled my whole country, learning new things, learning different cultures, helping in different causes, foundations … definitely one of the biggest experiences of my whole life.”
