KEY POINTS

  • The New York Knicks have struggled in the past few years
  • One of their main players RJ Barrett could be used as a trade asset for a future star
  • Barrett is averaging 14.3 points per game as the Knicks' starting shooting guard

While the NBA remains to be suspended, the offseason ideas from different teams remain abundant. The latest possible scenario speculating involves the New York Knicks considering shipping RJ Barrett for a star.

The Knicks are currently near the bottom of the Eastern Conference with a 21-45 record. Prior to the coronavirus suspension of the league, the Knicks were among the teams struggling to make it to a playoff spot. The franchise has struggled tremendously in the past few years as their last postseason appearance was back in 2013.

The era of Carmelo Anthony with the Knicks was the last time the organization was considered as a perennial threat in their conference. Per Bleacher Report, one way the team can consider is by utilizing their assets on the team. One of their prized possessions is young scorer Barrett who they selected third overall in the draft.

The Duke standout has shown promise for the team with averages of 14.3 points an outing to go along with five rebounds a game. While he’s a gem that the organization plans to keep, it wouldn’t be too farfetched to picture a trade to boil down. SNY’s Ian Begley said that trading for a star is an option for the Knicks are willing to consider.

One important note to recognize is the Knicks’ new team president is Leon Rose, better known as the agent of stars such as Anthony and Devin Booker. There are several stars that will be free agents soon such as Bradley Beal and DeMar DeRozan. With the Knicks holding resources such as Barrett and seven first-round picks, there’s a chance that they can use these to their advantage.

It has been one of the more eventful years in NBA history but it would be interesting to see how everything will pan out. The Knicks have continued to struggle in the league but it will only be a matter of time before they recover. If the organization plays their cards right then perhaps a star may come and change the course of their struggling franchise.
