Police responded to an attack in the lower Manhattan area of New York City on Monday afternoon. At least four people were hit by a truck on the West Side bike path, according to ABC News. At least six people were shot after a gunman opened fire near West Street and Chambers Street near Stuyvesant High School, the New York Times reported.

It was unclear in the early moments after the incident how the two attacks played out and how they were related to one another. New York City Police confirmed eight people were killed and more than a dozen injured as a result of the vehicle attack. A video posted by a local reporter on Twitter appeared to show paramedics removing victims from a mangled school bus outside the high school. A block near the school was turned into a triage center, according to reports.

A graphic video posted on Twitter showed more than one person lying in the street on the West Side bike path after apparently being thrown from a bicycle. Some witnesses reported seeing a white pick up truck as part of the attack.

Initial reports said the situation appeared to have begun as a dispute between two drivers, according to ABC News. However, WNBC reported that authorities were investigating the incident as an act of terror.

Mayor Bill de Blasio in a press conference too called the incident a "particularly cowardly act of terror," adding that "New Yorkers are resilient."

Sayfullo Saipov, 29, has been identified as the suspect in the shooting. Authorities say he was being held in custody at a hospital but were not disclosing which at press time.

US president Donald Trump reacted to the attack on Twitter and said: "Another attack by a very sick and deranged person" adding, "We must not allow ISIS to return, or enter, our country after defeating them in the Middle East and elsewhere. Enough!"

Later on Tuesday night, Trump said new measures were being taken in the aftermath of the attack.

Argentina’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that five friends from the country were among the dead. They had come to the city to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their high school graduation. Didier Reynders, Deputy Prime Minister, and Foreign Affairs Minister for Belgium wrote on Twitter that at least one the victims was Belgian. The other two victims are yet to be identified. The New York Post also reported that two school staff members and two students were among those who were wounded. One student was said to be critically injured.
