Things are about to get interesting because Disney+ just announced the release date for “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” Season 2 and Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett are back in the lead roles.

Since the last season of the show, Rodrigo and Bassett ended their off-screen relationship, and her song, “Driver’s License,” about the drama surrounding it, has been one of the biggest hits Spotify has seen.

Season 2 is slated to be released on May 14 on the streaming platform, so go ahead and make sure you set a reminder so you don’t miss the premiere.

The first season of the show follows a group of high schoolers at East High as they perform “High School Musical." It might sound confusing, but these students live their own dramatic high school life while making this stage production of the popular movie their main priority.

This time around the crew will be putting on "Beauty and the Beast,” not "High School Musical 2” like some might think, and they'll be competing against North High School. Tim Federle, the creator of the show, gave some insight to People Magazine about why the specific musical was chosen for the new batch of episodes.

“The outpouring of love and support for Season 1 has been incredibly exciting, and I’m thrilled that the Wildcats are putting on ‘Beauty and the Beast’ in Season 2. It was one of the first Broadway shows I ever saw, when I was 14, and it’s got all the perfect metaphors for the high school experience: Do people judge me for how I look? What is true love? Will I achieve the future I dream of? And, perhaps most importantly, it’s got dancing forks,” he said.

As for Rodrigo and Bassett, aka Nini and Ricky, many questions need to be answered concerning their future this season and how to navigate their new relationship. It is unclear if their real-life romance had any impact on their characters' stories, or if they were still together while filming.

Some favorite cast members will also be returning to the series as well, including Sofia Wylie, Larry Saperstein, Julia Lester, Matt Cornett, Dara Reneé, Frankie Rodriguez, Joe Serafini, Mark St. Cyr and Kate Reinders. Viewers can also expect guests appearances from Derek Hough, Olivia Rose Keegan, Roman Banks, Andrew Barth Feldman and Asher Angel, Decider reported.
