Oh, what a wonderful July day in 1998 it was when the world was gifted with the remake of “The Parent Trap,” starring Lindsay Lohan, Dennis Quaid, Natasha Richardson and Elaine Hendrix.

For so many millennials, the Nancy Meyers-directed “The Parent Trap,” about identical daughters (Lindsay Lohan in a dual role) of divorced parents (Quaid and Richardson), who learn of each other during summer camp at 11 years old, was a classic childhood movie. It was a film they could enjoy over and over again, either because they related to it, enjoyed the storyline, loved the humor, wanted to learn the epic handshakes or adored the thought that Lohan was actually a twin.

It’s now been almost 20 years since the film was released, and the child-aged viewers are all grown up. That doesn’t mean they’ve stopped watching the film however. It just means they tend to watch it and notice things a little differently now. Among those who recently shared that experience were "Modern Family" star Sarah Hyland and "Pretty Little Liars" alum Ashley Benson.

When Hyland rewatched the family film on Friday, she took issue with one of the characters, Meredith Blake (Hendrix), and not for the usual reasons why viewers disliked the devious, greedy, vain and controlling woman. Instead, Hyland had a problem with the fact that this character is supposed to be 26 years old.

Currently, Hyland is the same age as Meredith at 26 years old, but she’ll be turning 27 in November. Though she’s now the same age as the character, it makes sense that this comes as shock to her as she was only seven years old when the film first came out, while the character was, of course, still 26 and thus so much older than Hyland at the time.

Hyland wasn’t alone in having to reassociate herself with the film as a 26-year-old and finding it difficult to wrap her mind around. On Saturday, Benson saw Hyland’s tweet and was happy to find someone who felt the same way as she did.

“Lmao just seeing this. I just watched as well and was like what the [expletive] wild,” Benson tweeted in response to Hyland.

Benson is a year older than the “Modern Family” star at 27 years old, and is turning 28 in December, but that difference is so miniscule, especially when talking about a character who’s relatively the same age as they both are now.

What’s interesting is that while most actors and actresses tend to play characters who are a lot younger than they actually are in real life, Hendrix wasn’t actually that different in age from Meredith when she played the role. Born on Dec. 28, 1970, Hendrix was 27 years old when the film was released, only a year older than her 26-year-old character, which means she was most likely only 25 or 26 when she filmed the movie.

Guess that just means that Hyland and Benson are now of a suitable age to portray Meredith Blake, should the opportunity for yet another “Parent Trap” remake arise. Though, considering their tweets, that seems like it would be too much for them to wrap their heads around, age-wise.
