  • Sony announced the PlayStation Plus Collection
  • It could be the company's answer to Xbox Game Pass
  • Sony also announced the price and release date of the PS5

Sony announced a new service called PlayStation Plus Collection that could rival Xbox Game Pass. Over the past months, many gamers were wondering about the PS5’s backwards compatibility with PS4 titles. It looks like Sony kind of addressed this issue with the announcement of the PlayStation Plus Collection.

Sony officially announced the PlayStation Plus Collection for PS5. The Japanese gaming giant described the service as a bundle of generation-defining PS4 titles that subscribers could download at the launch of PS5. Essentially, anyone who owns PlayStation Plus on PS5 would have access to a curated library of PS4 games.

The list of games included in the new PlayStation Plus Collection includes first-party classics like “God of War,” “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End,” “The Last of Us: Remastered” and “Bloodborne.” Other games available to PlayStation Plus Collection includes “Monster Hunter: World,” “Final Fantasy XV,” “Ratchet & Clank,” “Days Gone,” “Until Dawn,” “Detroit: Become Human,” “Battlefield 1,” “Infamous Second Son,” “The Last Guardian,” “Persona 5” and” Resident Evil 7.”

Sony’s official announcement of the PlayStation Plus Collection lacks details of how exactly it would work. However, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan offered more insight about the new service in a subsequent blog post. “For PlayStation Plus members, we’ll have a special new offering on PS5 – the PlayStation Plus Collection. PS5 owners with PS Plus will be able to download and play a curated library of PS4 games that defined the generation. The PS Plus Collection will be an added benefit to the existing PS4 benefits that PS Plus members receive for a single subscription price.”

Unfortunately, Sony has not mentioned if the PlayStation Plus Collection is for a limited time or if the curated library would be updated over time. However, it is interesting to note that Sony has come up with something that could respond to Xbox Game Pass. While it is true that PlayStation Now exists, it is just a standalone service that merges game streaming and downloads. The service has struggled to take off since it debuted in January 2015.

Meanwhile, Sony finally announced the price of the PS5. The PS5 Digital Edition retails at $399 while the PS5 with Blu-Ray disc costs $499. The gaming consoles are now up for pre-order and are slated to arrive on November 12 in the U.S. and November 19 for the rest of the world.
