KEY POINTS

  • Red Devils giving Sheffield loan extension for Dean Henderson
  • Henderson to play important role for The Blades
  • Man Utd may be taking big risk with loan extension for Henderson

Several players have contracts expiring, including football players on loan deals. Technically, their tenure would be lapsing before the current season comes to a close. This was the situation put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic suspending play last March. One player who finds himself in that situation is Dean Henderson of Sheffield United.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper, who is on loan from Manchester United, may not be able to suit up for The Blades' last 10 games. His contract will expire in June. But it appears the Red Devils will make life easier for Sheffield. There are reports that Man Utd will sanction an extension so that the English goalkeeper can finish his sting at Bramall Lane. The reported move is a class act but something that comes with risks.

Sheffield United is just two points behind the Red Devils and a win over Aston Villa could push them ahead of the Red Devils. Aside from that, they would also be just two points behind Chelsea which sits in fourth place in the Premier League table. The Blades are currently tied with Wolverhampton in points at 43 apiece.

The whole situation is a bit odd considering the Red Devils could opt not to extend Henderson's deal and leave Sheffield in a tough spot. However, Henderson may not be of good use to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at this point. They seem to be holding up fine with David de Gea as their goalie.

Once the loan extension is finalized, Scheffield can heave a sigh of relief. Henderson has been performing well and Chris Wilder is expected to play him in every game for as long as he is healthy. The 23-year-old has played a key role for The Blades who are trying to pump up their Champions League run. So far, only Liverpool (21) has conceded more goals than Sheffield (25).

For its part, United is not free from manpower complications. The case of Odion Ighalo remains unsettled although Solskjaer mentioned in a previous report that loan extension talks are in the works with Shanghai Shenhua. The case of Nigerian is a bit sensitive, especially with reports that Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba may be returning to action soon.
