Prince George Throws A Tantrum During First Official Royal Engagement With Kate Middleton And Prince William [PHOTOS]
Maybe the roar from the helicopters spooked Prince George, or perhaps the young royal was so excited about seeing the copters up and close and personal that he didn’t know how to react. Whatever the reason, Prince George threw a little fit Friday while accompanying his parents, Kate Middleton and Prince William, on a royal engagement in the United Kingdom.
The outing marked Prince George’s first official public engagement, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the almost 3-year-old. According to E! News, Prince George had a tantrum before boarding a helicopter with his mom and dad at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford. The Duchess of Cambridge quickly scooped up her son in her arms, which calmed him down immediately.
People magazine reported that Prince George seemed a bit “apprehensive” because of everything that was going on around him. He was also said to be nervous about sitting inside the helicopter near the controls with his dad, the Duke of Cambridge. Instead, he hung out on the back seat with Middleton.
“He seemed overawed with the noise and being inside a helicopter. It was a lovely family moment,” Flight Lieutenant Jim Hobkirk said. “We shut the doors so they could have a quiet moment to themselves. The Duke was telling him, ‘I used to fly these.’ George was very quiet.”
He added, “Everyone was just trying to keep him happy. There was a lot going on for him with the noise from all these airplanes. He seemed quite subdued in the end.”
Despite the future king’s brief meltdown, it appears he did enjoy the trip. People reported that he waved to the crowd and pointed at the planes in the sky while wearing a pair of blue noise-blocking headphones. “I imagine his father has told him about helicopters, so he knew what that was called and kept saying, ‘tail rotor.’ It was good to see his technical knowledge! Some training going on early,” Hobkirk told the outlet.
In February, Cadet Lucinda Conder told reporters at the 75th anniversary of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets that Middleton said Prince George really liked airplanes. After showing him a photo of a Spitfire Fighter plane, Middleton supposedly told the group that the little boy became “obsessed” with air cadets and wants to join when he’s older.
