KEY POINTS

  • "PUBG" is one of the biggest battle royale games in the world but has been outshined by newer titles
  • A new leak claims the game's sequel is coming very soon
  • Krafton is reportedly working on "PUBG 2" and "PUBG Mobile 2"

Sequels to both "PUBG" and "PUBG Mobile" are reportedly in the works, which could be the key to revive its flagging brand.

The latest information came from the Korean media outlet MTN, which was shared by "PUBG" insider PlayerIGN on Twitter. According to the report, a sequel to "PUBG" has been in the works for some time. It appears that Krafton, the parent company of PUBG Corporation, started the recruitment for the sequel of the battle royale title in May 2019.

The sequel to "PUBG Mobile," on the other hand, is being developed in-house by the same team that made "PUBG Lite." It was earlier speculated that the team was working on a project under the name ProjectXTRM, but the devs insisted that it has nothing to do with the "PUBG" sequel.

However, ProjectIGN mentioned in the tweet that the secret project is indeed the codename for the sequel to "PUBG Mobile." As it turns out, the company's previous denial was just a misdirection.

Meanwhile, Wccftech reported that PlayerUnknown himself, Brendan Greene, will not be involved in the "PUBG" and "PUBG Mobile" sequels. In the past, Greene mentioned that he was not interested in making a sequel to the battle royale title. Apparently, his stand remains the same. Currently, Greene is reportedly working on a new IP at PUNG Amsterdam studio.

As for the official announcement of "PUBG 2" and "PUBG Mobile 2," the Korean outlet said it could happen in the second quarter of 2021. This could mean fans could have their first glimpse of the new titles as early as March. The sequel to the standard "PUBG" game will reportedly continue to feature crossplay across PC and consoles.

Meanwhile, "PUBG Mobile" will be continuously developed by Tencent. The Chinese company intends to ensure that the game succeeds in "discovering growth engines with its internal development capabilities."

"PUBG" is one of the biggest battle royale titles in the world. However, it has been outshined by newer titles like "Call of Duty: Warzone," "Fortnite" and "Apex Legends." "PUBG Mobile" is still a popular shooter game, but fans are also looking forward to more content.
