Pumpkin carving is known as the best and fun part of Halloween, because the patterns help to create that scary effect.
In the U.S., the carved pumpkin was first associated with the harvest season, before it became an emblem of Halloween.

Artist Russ Leno of Sleepy Hollow Master Pumpkin Carvers of Seattle works on a 657-pound pumpkin at Microsoft's Redmond, Washington campus on Oct. 27. Leno was hired by Microsoft to carve the jack-o'-lantern which will be auctioned to company employees to raise money for charity before Halloween.
