Prince George received a call and a surprise gift from his great grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, as he celebrated another milestone this week.

The Queen took the time to make Prince George's eighth birthday extra special this year amid the ongoing pandemic. Her Majesty called Prince William and Kate Middleton's eldest son when he celebrated his birthday Thursday, Us Weekly reported.

"The queen Zoomed Prince George to wish him a happy birthday. She sent him a lovely gift as a surprise," an unnamed source told the outlet.

The third in line to the throne "loves his great grandmother so much," the insider added.

Aside from the present he got from his great-grandmother, Prince George's parents and siblings also surprised him with lots of gifts on his special day, according to the source.

"It’s really nice for him because there’s no school at the moment. He’s on holiday," the insider told the outlet. "Kate and William surprised George with a football cake. He received lots of lovely presents — a nature explorer set and a cool watch!"

Meanwhile, Prince George's younger siblings Princess Charlotte, 6, and Prince Louis, 3, "made their own adorable birthday cards for their brother," the tipster added.

The source described Prince George as “a confident and energetic little boy,” who “loves reading, sports, puzzles and is super outdoorsy and adventurous.”

Ahead of Prince George's birthday, Prince William and Middleton released a new portrait of their son on Instagram and Twitter to mark the milestone. The photo showed the young royal smiling while sat on top of a Land Rover in a blue polo shirt and matching shorts. The image was taken by his mother at their family home in Norfolk, England, last month.

Following the release of the portrait, royal fans sent Prince George their birthday greetings and couldn't help but gush over how much he resembles a young Prince William.

"Oh my goodness look how much he resembles his Dad..and grandmother. Happy Birthday, young Prince!" one netizen commented on Instagram.

"He looks so much like William! Happy Birthday, George, have a lovely day!! We love you so much!" another wrote.

The Queen reposted the birthday portrait of Prince George on the royal family’s official Instagram account, along with the message: “Wishing Prince George a very happy birthday today.”
