For “Reign” fans that are still in denial that The CW series is ending: Here’s a reality check. The network released the series finale date of the period drama. The series airs its last episode on Friday, June 16 at 9 p.m. EDT. The final episode is titled All It Cost Her.

“Reign” has had a great four-season run. However, fans are now wondering whether the it will stay true to history or deviate from the books. After all, the real Mary (Adelaide Kane), Queen of Scots’ [spoiler alert!] life ended with her losing her head on Queen Elizabeth’s (Rachel Skarsten) orders after she was found guilty of plotting to assassinate her.

READ: No new episode of “Reign” airs on Friday, April 21.

Will “Reign” stay true to the real story and end with Mary losing her head? Kane told TVLine, “We have taken some very generous creative liberties with our storylines, but we have kept the bones fairly accurate. I mean, if we were going to throw the baby out with the bathwater, we would have had Francis live. And then none of this would have happened!”

It seems from her comment that Mary will indeed lose her head. But maybe “Reign” will spin the story differently. After all, King Francis (Toby Regbo) and Queen Mary weren’t actually great lovers in history. Some even speculated that they did not consummate their marriage since they tied the knot at a very young age.

Unfortunately, Mary’s life becomes worse after marrying Lord Darnley (Will Kemp). Her unhappy marriage ends with Darnley dying under suspicious circumstances and many believing that she and her lover Lord Bothwell (Adam Croasdell) played a part in his murder.

The Scottish queen then marries Bothwell but their happiness is smeared with nobles disapproving of their union. Fortunately, Mary’s son James I ascends to the throne and rules both Scotland and England peacefully.

Besides seeing how the monarch’s story ends in “Reign,” fans are equally interested in knowing whether Torrance Coombs will reprise his role as fan-favorite character Bash in Season 4, episode 16. How we miss Bash!

“Reign” airs Fridays at 9 p.m. EDT on The CW.
