"Sonic the Hedgehog 2" director Jeff Fowler has clarified that the Sonic Cinematic Universe won't follow the same sequence as the video games, though there will be "a little bit of cherry-picking" from the said materials.

"It's not always going to be a linear progression of like 'Oh, this was in Sonic 2 so it's going to be in the Sonic 2 film'. It's going to be a little bit of a cherry-picking, a little bit of a melting pot," the 43-year-old director told IGN Tuesday.

He went on to explain that there is a lot of "great" stuff in the video game series that they can get inspiration from and unfortunately, they can't put everything in one movie. Hence, fans of the video game series might have to revisit their favorite moments "somewhere else."

"There's so much great, inspiring imagery to pull from the 30 years of games," Fowler explained. "So if we didn't get it in one film, there's always the chance that we'll revisit it somewhere else."

He shared that this is an exciting way to tell a story because following the same order of events in the video game series will just allow fans to easily predict what is going to happen next.

"It's also exciting for the fans to not know what's going to come in where," he said. "Rather than just knowing we're going down a checklist from A to B to C to D."

The director also admitted he's "excited about telling a story" with Knuckles, who is teased at the end of the official trailer that came out in December 2021.

"I think it's teased in this film, and I can't say more than that," he explained. "The character is teased. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but that definitely is something I'd be very excited about telling a story with."

Toby Ascher, one of the producers of the movie, also revealed Tuesday that a Sonic Cinematic Universe, where new characters will be added, is currently being created.

"We're creating a Sonic cinematic universe, so we knew we were going to add characters, like Tails and Knuckles; new to the films but beloved by gamers all over the world," he told Eurogamer.

"Sonic the Hedgehog 2" is slated for release on April 8.
