KEY POINTS

  • Manchester United ramps up its chase for midfielders available in the transfer market
  • Aston Villa and Leeds United have expressed no interest in dealing McGinn and Phillips respectively
  • The Red Devils once tried to acquire McGinn in 2019

Manchester United is bent on adding more players to beef up its midfield, and it appears there are at least two names the Red Devils are keeping tabs with.

According to The Sun, the Red Devils have their eye on John McGinn of Aston Villa with Kalvin Phillips of Leeds United being another option.

McGinn is someone who Manchester United has targeted before. It was in 2019 when the Red Devils reportedly had their eyes on the 27-year-old player midfielder. The main reason behind the interest was Sir Alex Fergusson.

But at that time, the Lions wanted at least £50 million ($66.24 million) for the Scottish player. The pursuit went for naught, and there is no telling how much Aston Villa will now ask if they are open to selling the Scottish midfielder.

While the asking price for McGinn remains unknown, the Red Devils are expanding their options.

If they fail to get McGinn, the attention shifts to Phillips.

Although the English midfielder has been performing well recently under the watch of Marcelo Bielsa, the 26-year-old could be open to a change of scenery.

The fact remains that rhe Peacocks have been struggling despite the efforts of Phillips.

To illustrate, Phillips did a good job putting the clamps on Harry Kane in their recent visit to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Neither Aston Villa nor Leeds United appears to be ready to deal out McGinn and Phillips respectively.

But if Manchester United is determined to enlist one of the two midfielders who are making noise in the English Premier League, their best chance may be on McGinn.

Though Phillips could flourish if he moves to Old Trafford, a report from TBR suggested that his loyalty remains at Elland Road for the time being.
