"A muscle cramp is a strong, painful contraction or tightening of a muscle that comes on suddenly and lasts from a few seconds to several minutes," according to WebMD.
There are several reasons that can cause muscle cramps, including exercising, injury, or overuse of muscles, or exposure to cold temperatures, medical conditions, such as blood flow problems, kidney disease, thyroid disease, and multiple sclerosis, or potassium, calcium, and other mineral deficiency in the blood. Dehydration also sometimes causes muscle cramps.
Below are few tips to stop a muscle cramp.
1. Stretch and massage your muscles that have been affected by the cramps.
2. Take shower with warm water to relax the muscle or place a heating pad on the muscle.
3. Try using an ice or cold pack along with a cloth to be kept between the skin and the ice pack.
4. According to WebMD, some medicines that can be taken to relieve the pain include acetaminophen(Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), or naproxen (Aleve).
5. Drink plenty of water or consume vitamin drinks such as Gatorade that help ease leg cramps.
If none of the above methods prove to be helpful, one should seek medical help.
