WATCH: Disturbing Video Shows Nanny Violently Tossing Infant Into Cot

A nanny is facing charges of attempted murder and child abuse after a disturbing video surfaced of her allegedly throwing a baby violently into a cot at the child’s house in Namibia, reports said.

The footage was captured last week by a hidden camera installed by the baby’s mother, Annemarie Theron, after she suspected that the nanny was abusing her nine-month-old daughter Laila.

The video shows the nanny (whose name was not revealed) manhandling Laila by tossing her violently into her crib and then picking up and holding her upside down.

Theron told the Rekord that she noticed "some marks under Laila’s feet in July but never suspected our nanny,” who was looking after the baby since May.

She told News 24 that her suspicions that the nanny was abusing her daughter rose when she later noticed bruises on Laila’s neck and shoulders. When she saw her baby had marks on her arms and neck in August, she began monitoring the situation closely.

She also said that her husband, when he was home in Outjo in the Kunene region of the country for two days in September, had pointed out that Laila appeared to be afraid of her nanny.

“After that I sat at work, thinking about my daughter the entire day. That’s when I decided to install cameras, so that I could see what was happening when I’m not at home,” Theron said.

When she saw that Laila had a bump on her forehead last Wednesday and the nanny told her she had fallen from her cot, Theron enlisted the help of a friend and downloaded an application that allowed her to see the footage from her phone.

She then filed a complaint at the Outjo police station, following which the nanny was arrested Friday.

She appeared in court Monday on charges of attempted murder, and is set to remain in custody until October, after she was denied bail, Rekord reported.

Talking about the incident, Theron said: "It was very emotional watching it. I refused to sleep, eat or drink for a couple of days afterward. It’s difficult to imagine how long this has been going on for. I can see Laila is so, so broken after everything." She added: “What happened was horrible to witness. I realised Laila has nightmares.”

Support poured in for the couple after the footage was posted on social media. The mother, who is a reservations and marketing manager at a lodge, later took to Facebook to thank all those who had supported her and apologized to her daughter.

“My precious baby Laila Danae please know we love you endlessly and we are SO SO sorry for what you have been through!! We thank the Lord for His protection and faithfulness, that you are still alive and still such a shining ray of light to so many people - you are so loved!! Out of the depth of our hearts Johan and I want to thank EVERYONE (family, old friends, new friends and total strangers) for ALL their love, support, calls, messages and prayers during this time!!!,” she wrote in a post.
