A mysterious sea creature with hundreds of moving tentacles washed up on the shores of a beach in Vietnam late last month. Videos of the marine species — which resembles a huge piece of seaweed — were posted online this week.

The dark brown creature left beachgoers baffled with its strange alien-like shape and movements. A local tour guide picked up the creature from the beach in Kien Giang province, in southern Vietnam.

Footage shows the creature placed on a green plastic table as the guide inspects the unknown marine species. Its star-shaped body in the middle with several branches spiralling out from the center, moves around in different directions, the video shows.

"I don’t know whether it’s an animal, vegetation or something else,” tour guide Du Nam Du said. The mystery creature was later released back into the ocean.

Social media users were also left confused about what the creature was, with one user saying: "It’s a monster. One day it will come back out of the ocean. It’ll be 10 times bigger.” Another said: "I don’t know what it is but it’s scary. It’s actually gross and I don’t want to be near it.”

Mike Van Keulen, a Marine Biology expert from Murdoch University, told Yahoo7 News the creature was believed to be part of the brittle star group, which are closely related to starfish.

Numerous other mysterious creatures have drawn curious onlookers in the past as people try to determine their origin. In one such similar case last year, a massive monstrous sea creature washed up on the shores of an Indonesian beach. The bloated corpse, around 50 feet long, was found on Hulung Beach on Serum Island in Indonesia’s Maluku province. Pictures showed the monstrous creature’s discolored body lying in shallow water on the island.

In March, a mysterious “crocodile-like” creature found washed up on a beach in Australia. The creature had a long head, giant jawline and slender tail.

“It looked like a well-rotted cetacean to me. Other people think it is something different, like a crocodile," the person who discovered the creature said at the time.
