Although the final episode of “Pretty Little Liars” aired on Tuesday, fans may not have to say goodbye to the world of small town girls and mysterious villains just yet. “PLL” showrunner I. Marlene King hinted that a spinoff of the popular Freeform series may be in the works.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, King acknowledged that Sara Shepard, the creator of “Pretty Little Liars,” was in talks to make one of her other books into a Freeform series.

When the executive producer was asked about teaming up with the author for the potential series based on her book “The Perfectionists” and its connection to “PLL,” King revealed that she couldn’t say much about the spinoff rumors.

“You know there might be some truth to that, but my hands are tied and I’m not allowed to talk about it just yet. So hopefully we will get to share some news soon!” the showrunner stated.

“The Perfectionists” follows the story of five girls Caitlin, Ava, Parker, Julie and Mackenzie from Beacon Heights, Washington. The girls, who initially have nothing in common, find out they all hate the most popular boy in school, Nolan Hotchkiss. Nolan has done terrible things to each of the girls and the five plan his hypothetical murder perfectly.

Although it starts out as a joke, Nolan soon turns up dead in the exact way the girls plotted his demise, however, they did not commit the murder. Each girl, who holds her own dirty little secret, must now scramble to find the killer before their perfect lives are ruined.

The “Pretty Little Liars” series focused on four girls Aria (Lucy Hale), Emily (Shay Mitchell), Hanna (Ashley Benson) and Spencer (Troian Bellisario) who grew apart following the disappearance of their clique leader, Alison (Sasha Pieterse).

However, when a mysterious villain named “A” began to threaten to expose their secrets, the four came together to uncover the villain’s identity while learning one another’s secrets along the way.

Once Alison comes back in the picture, the group discovers the identity of “A” and forms an unbreakable bond that is later interrupted by a new villain called A.D., who happens to be Spencer’s evil twin.

King admitted that picking the actor to play the latest villain, A.D., was initially a difficult task. “The entire writers’ room thought a lot about this and part of it was actors’ availability. When you don’t own certain actors and they’re not series regulars, you never know if they’re going to be available to you,” King told THR.

“There were times when I loved the idea of Wren (Julian Kingston) being A.D., Melissa (Torrey DeVitto) being A.D., a combination of those two, but ultimately we never knew if we were going to get those people in these last 10 episodes and that sort of started discussion that A.D. really needs to be someone who’s a series regular, and fans were always wanting it to be one of the girls ... which makes no sense to me because they really would be torturing themselves — the mythology would never work,” she told the publication.

“So that’s when we thought, well we love twins on this show and making it a twin of a PLL is sort of having your cake and getting to eat it too, so it’s almost a ‘pretty little liar,” King said.

Now that “Pretty Little Liars” is over, fans will have to patiently wait to see if King’s latest collaboration with Shepard will make it to the small screen.
