In a shocking incident, the decomposing body parts of a woman were found inside a drum in a locked house in India.

The police, who made the discovery in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday, said the body parts were heavily decomposed, which led them to believe the remains had been in the drum for over a year.

The incident came to light when the owner of the house broke open the door as the unidentified tenant had not paid rent for months, NDTV reported.

"In June 2021, the tenant vacated the house without clearing the dues, citing wife's pregnancy. But it is said that he had come to the house through the back door once after, but yet hadn't paid the owner. After waiting for over one year, the owner today forcefully entered the house to clear the belongings of the tenant when in a drum body parts of a woman has been recovered," a senior police official told NDTV.

The initial investigation revealed the woman's body was cut into pieces a year ago, the police said. The identity of the woman has not been confirmed so far, Hans India reported.

"We're suspecting that it could be his wife. The (house) owner has given a complaint, based on which a case has been registered," the officer said.

The incident comes amid nationwide stir following the Delhi murder case involving Aaftab Amin Poonawala and his girlfriend, Shraddha Walkar. Poonawala had allegedly chopped the body of her live-in partner into 35 parts. After killing Walkar, he had stored her body parts in a newly bought fridge and disposed of them over the next two to three months. According to reports, Poonawala drew inspiration from the crime series "Dexter." He also brought other women home and slept with them while the victim's remains were stored inside a fridge. Officials recovered the woman's human remains after searching the wooded area where the accused said he discarded his girlfriend's body parts. "We have recovered some parts at his instance. They are in a very bad shape. Mostly bones have been recovered which prima facie appear to be of a human's [sic]. They have been sent for examination ...," an officer told CNN-News18 last month.
