1 Found, 3 Missing In Martha’s Vineyard Fishing Accident
A fisherman was rescued from a capsized boat on the coast near Martha’s Vineyard while three others were missing on Monday morning.
According to NBC News, the U.S. Coast Guards received a distress signal around 3:45 p.m. on Sunday coming from a scallop boat called Leonardo that capsized and sank 24 nautical miles southwest of Martha’s Vineyard.
The Air Station Cape Cod dispatched Jayhawk helicopter crew who eventually recovered one of the fishermen on a life raft without a life vest around 4:48 p.m.
Petty Officer Ryan Noel told MV Times that around the time of the boat’s capsizing, the waters were nine feet deep with 29 knot winds gusting to 39 knots and the men weren’t wearing survival suits.
The search for the three other fishermen continued until 11 p.m. on Sunday before they were spelled by an Ocean Sentry fixed wing aircraft crew, Noel said.
The search was continued on Monday morning with more authorities involved.
Aside from another Jayhawk crew that resumed the search on Monday, an 87-cutter Cobia from Woods Hole also searched for the missing fishermen overnight and into the following morning and was also joined by a Boston 270-foot cutter Escanaba.
The missing men were still not found as of 8 a.m.
