Oakland, California -- One girl was among three people shot at while a football game was being held at the Oakland Technical High School in California. Authorities have not identified the victims and possible suspects yet.
Witnesses told local KFSN-TV that one adult male, a young girl and another adult female were injured after gunshots were heard in the football game stands just after 1 p.m. Sunday. Officers were spotted in the school’s vicinity after they responded to the scene, the outlet reported.
The first victim, a “man in his 30s,” was found by officers at the football field, KNTV reported. The outlet further reported that officers soon discovered a 6-year-old girl who was injured, as well as a 52-year-old woman. Other reports said the young girl was 5 years old. Authorities have since revealed that all three victims were in stable condition after they were transported to nearby hospitals.
There were hundreds of people at the stands as the Oakland youth football team faced off with the Pop Warner team, CBS News reported. The Oakland Police Department (OPD) has launched an investigation into the shooting and witnesses have been urged to contact the OPD if they have information about the incident.
News of the shooting at Oakland Tech High School came nearly a year after police were called in over gunshots heard in the school’s vicinity. At that time, a police officer told KRON-TV that the OPD “received a call of gunshots fired right here in front of Oakland Technical High School.” The officer confirmed that a shooting occurred in the area but that no one was struck by gunfire.
The city also saw multiple shootings and homicides over the July 4th weekend. The OPD said it was investigating a July 1 shooting that killed an adult male, as well as the deaths of two individuals who were found with gunshot wounds on July 4. Another July 4th fatal shooting is under investigation, wherein a male adult sustained gunshot wounds. Investigators said more than 100 rounds were fired at the scene.
Oakland has had 63 homicides in 2022 as of mid-July, including the fatal shooting of a man on the evening of July 17 at the 2000 block of 13th avenue.
