A 1-year-old girl was found dead in a vehicle after the infant's mother forgot to drop her off at daycare, police said.

The Harris County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a child left in a hot vehicle in the Alief area of Texas on Thursday. The child was found dead after being accidentally left inside the parked car for almost 10 hours -- 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m, police said, Click2 Houston reported.

According to a preliminary investigation, the child's mother went to drop her three kids aged 5, 3 and 1, at a daycare near her home Thursday morning. But for some reason, the 1-year-old was left behind in the car and the mother returned home without realizing it.

She went about her day and switched cars at some point. In the evening, she went to pick up her kids from daycare and realized that only two kids were dropped off, police said in a news release.

A worker from the daycare then accompanied the mother to help search for the missing child. The girl was found on the floorboard of the backseat of the car and pronounced dead at the scene.

The police said they have detained the mother for questioning and the case will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office. The attorney's office will determine if any charges would be filed, police said.

Last week, a four-month-old girl from Jordan died after the child's mother forgot her inside a car in the parking lot of her office. The baby girl was usually cared for by her mother's sister and the accident happened on the day when the mother brought her to the workplace for the first time while the latter was unavailable, according to an investigation. The mother planned to leave the infant at the daycare of her office but accidentally left the infant in the backseat of the car. When the mother eventually remembered about the infant, she was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the hospital.
