10 Celebrities Who Used Surrogates To Have Children
Advancements in the world of medicine over the years has made the ability to biologically expand one's family, no matter age or medical conditions of the mother, a bit easier through the option of surrogacy.
On Wednesday, it was announced that Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West are expecting their third child in January, but were using a surrogate this time around. While this is due to a medical condition of Kardashian West’s, there are many reasons why women and couples choose surrogacy.
Here are 10 celebrities that have used surrogates to have children.
Kim Kardashian West
Kardashian West and West, who already have two kids, hired a surrogate in June to help grow their family. Although they did not use a surrogate for North, 4, or Saint, 21 months, they decided to go ahead with it for the third pregnancy because of Kardashian West’s medical condition of placenta accreta, which is when the placenta is abnormally attached to the uterine wall. The baby is due by the end of January, according to TMZ.
Amy Smart
After having fertility issues for years, Smart decided to use surrogacy and welcomed her daughter Flora in December 2016. A month after her child was born, she posted a sweet photo of the two of them to Instagram, as well as a caption revealing what she went through.
“One month ago today, Dec. 26th our amazing beautiful daughter came into this world,” Smart wrote. “Feeling so grateful to have her in my arms... after years of fertility struggles I give thanks today to our kind, loving surrogate for carrying her.”
Katey Sagal
The “8 Simple Rules” actress and her husband, “Sons of Anarchy” creator Kurt Sutter, had their daughter Esme Louise in 2007 through the use of a surrogacy mother.
“He’d never had his own biological children, so about five years into the relationship we started toying with the idea of maybe we should raise a child together,” Sagal told People in an interview about the birth of the child. “We went through the whole in vitro fertilization process and our embryos were not really strong, but we thought, ‘Let’s give it a shot and if it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be.’”
Ellen Pompeo
Pompeo was quite the keeper of secrets, as she managed to keep quiet for two months in 2014 that she had welcome her second daughter Sienna. In October of that year, she posted to Instagram to finally make the announcement, going on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” later to give a bit more information.
“This baby was born via surrogate, so I felt an obligation to keep the surrogate’s privacy,” she said. “That was of utmost importance to me.”
Sarah Jessica Parker
Parker and her husband Matthew Broderick welcomed their first child, James Wilkie, in 2002 before using a surrogate to have twin girls, Marion and Tabitha, in 2009.
Lucy Liu
In August 2015, Liu posted a photo of her son Rockwell Lloyd Liu and herself on Instagram, introducing the world to “the new little man” in her life, as she wrote along with the picture.
Later on, a representative for her confirmed to US Weekly that the child was born via a surrogate.
Nicole Kidman
Kidman is a mom of four. She adopted two children, Isabella and Connor, with her ex-husband Tom Cruise and then later on she gave birth to her daughter Sunday in 2008 with husband Keith Urban before welcoming her daughter Faith in 2010 via a gestational carrier.
Jordana Brewster
Through the use of a surrogate, the “Lethal Weapon” star and her husband Andrew Form welcomed two children – Julian, in 2013, and Rowan, in 2016.
Tyra Banks
The “America’s Got Talent” host underwent in vitro fertilization treatments and welcomed a “miracle baby boy” with the help of an “angel of a woman,” according to an Instagram post of Banks’ in January 2016.
She gushed about his fingers and big eyes taking after her and his mouth and chin taking after his fathers. She named her son York Banks Asla.
Elizabeth Banks
Both of Elizabeth’s children, Felix and Magnus, were born via surrogate, though the decision to use surrogacy wasn’t an easy one. The actress and filmmaker had help from family and friends to make the method a bit easier to process.
