An infant girl lost her life after being wedged into a couch just 10 days after birth. The child’s 32-year-old father was charged with felony injury to a child in connection with the incident that occured in Boise, Idaho.

Kody Durfee was drinking alcohol — a violation of his parole terms — in the events leading up to his daughter’s death on the night of Dec. 15. He was looking after the infant at their home in the area of Desert Avenue and South Cole Road when Durfee fell asleep on the couch with the baby on his chest, according to KTVB.

A family member arrived to find the infant crammed in the dangerous space. The baby was “wedged between (the man) and the couch,” as per the details revealed by the Ada County Sheriff's Office in a press release Wednesday. The baby was unresponsive, and the family member who found her tried to administer CPR but to no avail.

Upon calling 911, paramedics arrived at the scene and rushed the baby to a nearby hospital. The infant girl did not survive and was pronounced dead.

Durfee was questioned by cops on the night of the child’s death and was kept in custody at the Ada County Jail on a parole violation.

Court records showed that the father was previously found guilty of driving under the influence for the second time in 15 years and was sentenced to 18 months in prison, along with 8.5 years of indeterminate sentence, as reported by Idaho Statesman.

Durfee was forbidden from drinking alcohol as part of the conditions of his parole agreement; however, he told investigators that he had been consuming alcohol before falling asleep with his daughter on his chest, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Following investigations into the infant’s death, the Ada County Prosecutor’s Office issued an arrest warrant Thursday, Dec. 16 and charged Durfee with felony injury to child and a felony enhancement for infliction of great bodily injury.

The statement from the Sheriff’s Office said Durfee was served with the warrant at the Ada County Jail. If convicted for his baby daughter's death, Durfee could face a sentence of up to 30 years behind bars.
