10 Quick And Simple Steps To Practice Self-Care
We live in such a hectic world that we often forget to take care of our first priority — ourselves. Though it may seem selfish to put ourselves or our needs before everything else, it's the exact opposite.
Self-care comes in several shapes and forms — it could be something as fun as going out on a trip with your friends, or something very simple like giving yourself some time to relax and unwind. If you're still unsure about where to start or how to prioritize yourself, here are 10 simple suggestions:
1. Stay away from the phone while having your morning coffee
Most of us are used to looking at our phones from the minute we open our eyes. Instead of consuming technology first thing in the morning, try to spend at least 10 minutes to yourself. Make sure to keep your phone far away, while having your coffee. Let the coffee wake you up, instead of your emails.
2. Prioritize your health
Yes, our lives are hectic, but that does not mean we can forget to take care of our health. Don't cancel your doctors' appointments, as it's important to remain healthy if you wish to hustle like you already do.
3. Laugh as much as you can
It really is hard to find joy on some days, but laughing, even for a little bit, can elevate your mood and leave you feeling peppy for the rest of your day. It could be a call with a friend or a funny meme, try and laugh till your tummy aches every day.
4. Create a to-do list for the day
If you make a list of things you want to accomplish in a day, it gets easier for you to prioritize what you want to get done first, leaving you with enough time to enjoy some peace and quiet instead of rushing about your day.
5. Try to move throughout the day
Work demands us to be chained to our desks for hours together, and when we're done, we complain of sore muscles and joint pain. The best way to get rid of feeling rickety is to add some movement to your day. A simple stretch at your work desk or a brisk walk, to begin with, can make a huge difference.
6. Prioritize at least 7 hours of sleep
Sleep plays a pivotal role in one's health, even though it is often looked over. Without enough sleep, a person cannot function properly, leaving them grumpy and groggy. Try to get into a sleep cycle. You will thank yourself later.
7. Set a routine and stick to it
You will notice that things fall into place when you create a routine for yourself, by setting time for sleep, work, food and some me-time. It may take a while to get used to it, but once you do, you'll find things are easier.
8. Drink lots of water
Hydrate yourself. Drink as much water as you can. This is something all of us skimp on, despite having been advised not to do so multiple times. Get yourself a fancy bottle or download an app that reminds you, but keep drinking water. Your body will thank you for it.
9. Add lots of fresh produce to your diet
Eating off a packet may be ideal and easy, but the benefits of including raw, fresh produce in your diet are amazing. Within a week or so of making a dietary change, you will notice your body getting better!
10. Unfollow or unfriend anyone, who doesn't give you peace
Finally, you need to realize not everyone is your friend and that you cannot make everyone around you happy. You do not have to put up with someone just because you feel like you don't want to disappoint them. It's okay to let go of people who don't bring you joy.
