A 10-year-old boy in India died after he fell off a moving train as he mistook the exit door for a toilet.

The incident took place in the southern state of Kerala on Tuesday. The boy was traveling on Kochuveli-Nilambur Rajya Rani Express from the state's capital city Thiruvananthapuram with his family members at the time of the incident.

When Ishan's grandfather, who was sleeping at the time, realized the boy had fallen down, he pulled the chain to stop the train. After the train came to a halt, the family members began searching for the boy, but were unable to immediately locate him.

Residents living near the railway tracks rushed to the scene and found the boy. The child was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead. Doctors at the hospital said the boy had severe injuries on his spinal cord and head.

An autopsy was performed before the child’s body was handed over to the family, The Times of India reported.
