In a horrific incident, an 11-foot-long crocodile attacked and ate a child alive, while he was fishing with his father in a river in Malaysia.

The tragedy took place on Dec. 1 off the coast of Lahad Datu in Sabah. The 45-year-old man was with his 1-year-old boy on a canoe when the crocodile emerged from the water and grabbed the child, Yahoo News Australia reported.

The unidentified father tried to fight off the reptile, but could not save his son.

Sumsoa Rashid, head of the Lahad Datu Fire and Rescue Agency, said: "Despite the man's best efforts, he ended up with numerous bite wounds and could not stop his son being dragged underwater."

"There are several viral videos showing how the victim was attacked by the crocodile and then grabbed before being dragged to a nearby river."

A disturbing video, shared on YouTube, showed the crocodile biting the boy before submerging in the water. The crocodile can be seen with what appears to be a body in its jaws. Another video shared by some local media outlets showed the father talking about the incident, sobbing.

The Royal Malaysian Police and marine police launched a search to find the remains of the child. Authorities also warned villagers who lived near the river to stay out of the water, Channel News Asia reported.

"We have warned them of the extra dangers at the moment and to be especially careful because the crocodile is likely to be still in the area," Rashid said.

In a similar incident last month, a huge crocodile attacked and killed an 18-year-old boy, while he was bathing in a river in India. The incident took place when the boy was on the banks of Kollidam River in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. The crocodile reportedly emerged from the water and grabbed his arm, pulling him in. The authorities then launched a search for the teenager, and found his body two hours later.

In another incident in October, a man swimming in a river in the Indian state of Karnataka was attacked and dragged deep into the water by a huge crocodile.
