Meghan went to “General Hospital” and “Married…With Children” sets often as a kid. Her father Thomas Markle was a lighting designer, and he would bring her to work with him.
Traveling influenced her humanitarian side. Meghan went on trips with her mother, a social worker. She wanted to make the world a better place after seeing the slums of Jamaica.
She didn’t grow up as a royal family fan. “We didn’t sit down and watch the royals,” half-sister Samantha Markle said. “That’s a huge myth.”
She worked a minimum wage job as a kid. In the mid 1990s, Meghan started working at Humphrey Yogart, a frozen yogurt shop. “Megan was outgoing; she was friendly. She was able to converse with customers comfortably,” owner Jim Sheftel recalled. She also met Baywatch actress Yasmin Bleeth, one of her favorite actresses, while working there.
She got her first acting job before graduation. In 2002, on a summer break from Northwestern University’s prestigious theater program, Meghan was cast in a small role as a nurse on soap opera “General Hospital.” Casting director Mark Teschner said he could tell she was very serious about acting as a career.
Meghan was an understudy on “Deal or No Deal.” Though she appeared regularly in Season 2, Meghan’s job was to fill in whenever a model couldn’t appear. However, her co-stars knew that she had bigger dreams. “There were girls that you could tell wanted more, and Meghan was definitely one of those girls who wanted more,” Claudia Jordan, her “Deal or No Deal” co-star, said.
Meghan appeared on another game show. The aspiring actress also appeared on “1 vs. 100,” a game show hosted by Bob Saget. She only appeared in an episode.
Harry and Meghan were both in Afghanistan at the same time. Meghan was doing a USO tour with other celebrities for the U.S. troops while Harry was stationed in the middle east.
A friend set them up. No one has ever confirmed who that friend is, but some sources have said fashion designer Misha Nonoo was responsible.
Meghan attended Pippa Middleton’s reception. Though she didn’t attend the actual ceremony, one royal expert said that Meghan made a sneaky appearance at Kate Middleton’s sister’s reception.
Meghan is still estranged from half-sister Samantha. However, Samantha hopes that Meghan will be close to her again one day. “We will have a day when we will laugh about this, but just know that even with so much distance geographically between us, you’re still here [in my heart],” Samantha said.
