11-Year-Old Boy Suffers Traumatic Injuries After Mother Throws Him Down From 4th Floor
A woman was arrested for allegedly dragging and tossing her 11-year-old son from the fourth floor of an apartment’s balcony. The incident took place at Union Flats apartments located at Hampton Avenue, Minnesota, on Monday.
The 33-year-old accused, identified only as the boy’s mother, had reportedly dragged her son from his bunk bed and threw him off the fourth-floor balcony, following which, the boy suffered traumatic injuries. The motive behind the incident was unclear.
According to Steve Linders, a police spokesperson, officers received a 911 call about an attempted suicide from one of the residents at St. Anthony Park neighborhood on Monday morning. The resident contacted police after witnessing what looked like a child jumping off the balcony floor.
When officers arrived at the scene, the boy was found conscious in the building’s courtyard. An officer said the boy was unable to communicate with them and it looked like the boy might have broken bones in his legs.
Paramedics rushed him to Children’s Minnesota, a health care organization, for treatment, however, he was immediately redirected to another hospital due to the nature of his injuries. He was treated for a fractured jaw, broken femur and injuries to the head.
While investigating the case, it was concluded that the mother was responsible for the incident. The boy’s six-year-old sibling did not show any signs of physical injuries and appeared to be unharmed.
Linders said the incident deeply affected the responding officers as most of them were parents themselves.
“These are some of the most difficult calls that officers respond to,” she added.
The mother was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and malicious punishment of a child. She has no criminal history, except for some traffic violations. Her girlfriend was also called in for questioning.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson from the Union Flats apartment complex released a statement to the Star Tribune saying their foremost concern was for the child involved in the tragic incident.
