Mount Vernon, Indiana -- An 11-year-old boy in Indiana suffered serious injuries from a fireworks incident and died on the way to the hospital.

Camrynn Ray McMichael of Mount Vernon was the only child accompanying a group of adults in lighting fireworks over the July 4 weekend, Sgt. Todd Ringle of the Indiana State Police told TODAY Parents.

Responding officers arrived at the scene after Posey County 911 Dispatch received a call Sunday around 9:42 p.m. about a child being seriously injured. McMichael died while being transported to the hospital, Indiana State Police said in a Monday statement.

“This incident is being investigated by the Indiana State Police, Mt. Vernon Police Department and the Posey County Coroner,” the statement said.

The boy’s grieving mother, Kyrra Lynn, wrote on Facebook about her son’s death.

“I held my sons broken skull & brain in my hands last night yall.! THATS THE REALITY!” Lynn wrote. “Don’t even f---ing buy those damn things!”

The mother said her child, who loved football, soccer and basketball, was "gone in the blink of an eye."

"He was dedicated, hard working, (on the) honor roll, and never got in trouble. And if he did it’s because he wanted to make everyone laugh," the mother told TODAY Parents. "No matter the situation he tried to be happy."

Lynn said her son was also a doting brother to his little sister, Karmynn Louise.

"He protected her like a big brother should," the mother added. "He’s every parent's dream of a boy."

Maryann Watson, who lives in the same area as the bereaved family, said she noticed some bustle in the street Sunday and initially thought “somebody got a little too big on the party thing.”

The next day, she was shocked to find out McMichael had passed away. Although Watson didn’t know the family well, she said she would often see McMichael playing outside with other kids and described him as a sweet boy.

“I don’t know what I’m going to say to his mother when I see her because I can’t imagine what you do say to a mom, you know, when they’ve lost their little one,” Watson told 14 NEWS.

Matt Thompson, superintendent of MSD of Mt. Vernon Schools, also released a statement over the fireworks incident.

"The MSD of Mount Vernon is saddened by the loss of Camrynn. We are finalizing plans to provide grief counseling later this week for students and staff. It is tragic to lose such a young, energetic life and we hope to support those impacted by his loss to the best of our abilities,” Thompson said in a statement to TODAY Parents.
