Los Angeles police are now searching for the suspect in the fatal stabbing of a 13-year-old boy outside a fast-food restaurant Wednesday.

The victim, identified as Marco Murillo, of Rialto, California, was stabbed during a confrontation involving a group of teens, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said in a press release.

The LAPD said officers spotted a physical altercation involving several juvenile males at the intersection of 7th Street and Flower Street in Los Angeles at around 5:40 p.m. Wednesday.

The officers intervened and separated the several individuals involved.

During the altercation, Murillo was stabbed in the abdomen.

Officers provided medical treatment to Murillo and requested an ambulance.

The 13-year-old was rushed to a local hospital for further treatment. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The suspect, who has yet to be identified, fled the scene, according to authorities.

"The investigation at the scene revealed that Murillo and the suspect were involved in a verbal dispute, which quickly escalated to a physical dispute. During the dispute, the suspect stabbed Murillo with an unidentified cutting instrument. The suspect ran from the scene, eastbound on 7th Street," the LAPD said.

The suspect was described as a white or Hispanic boy aged between 14 and 17. He was said to be of medium height and build.

The victim's mother, Lorena Lopez, told Eyewitness News that her son was getting food at Chick-fil-A near 7th and Flower streets Wednesday night when a group of teens approached and attacked him, ABC 7 reported.

The mother said there's no indication her son knew the other teens involved in the attack.

"As far as I know, my son's never seen these guys a day in his life," Lopez said. "My son's never seen these guys. I've never seen them."

The victim's aunt, Alexis Lopez, said that Murillo was a "good kid" who had "good intentions" and a "good soul."

A family friend, Amanda Patterson, told the outlet that Murillo was "loved" and was "so helpful and wonderful." She also urged the person responsible for the stabbing to surrender to police, adding that it was "the right thing to do."

"The mom doesn't deserve to bury her 13-year-old son," Patterson stated.

According to ABC 7, police detained and handcuffed for questioning at the scene an individual who was described initially as just a person of interest.

But the handcuffed person escaped after someone in the crowd swung a skateboard at officers.

The individual who swung the skateboard was detained by the police, the report said.
