A 13-year-old girl fell violently ill and vomited blood allegedly after consuming a cold drink purchased from a local grocery shop in India. By the time she was rushed to a hospital, the teen's body had started to turn blue and she was declared dead upon arrival.

The shocking incident happened in the southern Indian city of Chennai on Tuesday.

The girl, identified as Tharani, had reportedly brought the cold drink from a shop near her home. She began throwing up blood immediately after consuming it. Her elder sister rang up her parents, who were at work, and asked them to rush home, reported News 18.

By then, the girl had collapsed. Her relatives rushed her to a nearby hospital but she was declared dead on arrival. Her parents said the body had started to turn blue by then.

Tharani had asthma and was advised by doctors not to consume aerated drinks. Police said her elder sister tried to stop her, but Tharani still managed to consume it.

Though the autopsy report said the child died due to asphyxiation after the drink entered her respiratory system, her parents have filed a complaint alleging the product was unsafe for consumption.

Following an investigation, food safety officers temporarily closed a cold drink manufacturing unit in the city Wednesday. The samples of the drink have been sent for forensic test. Officers also recalled over 540 bottles of the same batch, which were sent to different shops in the city. The owners of the manufacturing unit will be questioned soon.

Last year, a 58-year-old man died in Bali allegedly after drinking an expired soft drink. Kevin James Nunn fell ill after consuming two cans of expired tonic water. He immediately complained of chest pain and died soon after. Police said there was no suggestion that he was intentionally poisoned.
