14-Month-Old Baby Dies Of Blunt Force Trauma, Mother's Boyfriend Charged With Capital Murder
A 28-year-old man was arrested and charged Wednesday in the death of his girlfriend's 14-month-old child in Mississippi.
After being arrested by the Jackson police, Trevonte Leshawn Willis, 28, was sent to prison without a bond, and was charged with capital murder, WLBT reported.
Deputy Chief Deric Hearn said the toddler died from blunt force trauma due to child abuse.
The victim has been identified as Kahari Lofton. On Sept. 29, Lofton was rushed to a hospital due to breathing issues. The same evening, the child was declared dead.
Details about the abuse were not revealed by the authorities.
The child's biological father, Jajuan Moore, told WLBT he was going through an unnerving and unsettling feeling.
"The last few weeks have been a whirlwind," Moore said. "I haven't even started the grieving process. Right now, I'm not at rest until I know exactly what happened to my son!"
Moore said he and his child's mother separated in May after she allegedly left Lofton and their 4-year-old child home alone. He asked the child's mother to leave the house, but refused to let their children go with her.
"I told her she couldn't get 'em until she got help," he said. "But a few days later, she picked them up from the daycare and wouldn't let me see my kids for weeks. The daycare said they couldn't keep the biological child's mother from picking them up without a court order."
He had contacted Child Protective Services after the child's mother left with his kids. On Monday, Lofton was laid to rest in Smith County, with the child's mother and both of their families in attendance.
"It's still an ongoing investigation," Deputy Chief Deric Hearn told Dark Horse Press.
Earlier this month, a 10-month-old boy in Saginaw, Texas, died after being hospitalized. The child had signs of physical abuse, including head injuries and bruises. The mother's boyfriend was arrested on charges of abuse. The infant, Amonte Harris, was on life support at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth for a week before he was declared dead. The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Dennilson Alejandro Uk, was charged with injury to a child/serious bodily injury. The accused was not the father of the child.
