Authorities at the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Florida are investigating an incident in which a 14-year-old boy was run over and killed by a driver who suffered a gunshot wound and was in critical condition early Tuesday.
Deputies responded to The Place at Carrollwood apartment complex in Tampa Bay at around 9:30 p.m. ET and found the teenager dead, NBC-affiliated WFLA-TV reported, citing Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
The location is just six miles north of where the Super Bowl was played that evening. Deputies said just minutes before the teen was run over, he got into a physical altercation with the driver of the car, who is in her early 20s. At some point during the altercation, someone shot the driver, who was rushed to a hospital where she was listed in critical condition, the outlet reported.
"We are extremely saddened by the tragedy that resulted from a meaningless fight," WFLA-TV quoted Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister, as saying. "A child is dead because of the irresponsible actions of adults who engaged in a verbal dispute and allowed it to escalate.”
It wasn’t immediately known who fired the shot at the driver. Deputies with the sheriff’s office were interviewing witnesses as part of the probe. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident so far.
"Our detectives are processing the scene, interviewing witnesses, and working to determine who fired the shots. At this time, no arrests have been made and the motive is under investigation. Those who saw or heard something are urged to come forward," Chronister said, according to CBS-affiliated WTSP.
It is also not clear whether the two people involved in the incident knew each other previously.
In March 2015, a Milwaukee driver was shot and killed by an unidentified person after a 2-year-old boy was struck by his vehicle and killed. Police said the toddler was hit and killed after he ran onto the street. A teenager was also found shot to death alongside the driver, identified as Archie Brown Jr. The involvement of the teen in the accident wasn’t clear.
