A 14-year-old boy in New York was charged for allegedly breaking into the house of a woman, and raping her in front of her 4-year-old daughter, Long Island authorities said Tuesday.
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney, in a press conference Tuesday, announced the charges brought up against the accused in connection with the incident that occurred on April 19, calling the teen's actions "shocking and extremely disturbing," NBC New York reported.
The 14-year-old was arrested two days after the incident on unrelated charges, following which he admitted to burglarizing the Mastic Beach home, but denied sexual assault allegations.
However, when his DNA sample matched with what was taken from the victim, he was indicted as a juvenile offender with rape, criminal sex act, assaults, burglaries, sex abuse, strangulation and endangering the welfare of a child, NBC New York reported.
Authorities were reportedly still on the lookout for an accomplice.
The teen, who was wearing a mask at the time of the crime, broke into the Mastic Beach house of the 23-year-old woman along with another perpetrator at around 3.15 p.m. ET.
The teen's accomplice then started to ransack the house for items to steal. The victim said she heard noises downstairs, and had assumed her husband returned early from work, News 12 reported.
At some point, the duo found the mother and the daughter locked inside a room.
"While the defendant was alone in the room with the victim and her daughter, the defendant who was armed with a knife began to rape the victim in front of her daughter," Tierney said in the press conference, according to NBC New York.
The woman's neighbors told News 12 they saw her after the incident.
"She was bleeding from her head and her chest," said Dennis Naughton, a neighbor. "So I brought her on the deck and got some towels and called 911."
The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspect was arraigned without bail on May 3. The police identified neither the victim nor the suspect for the latter's age and the nature of the crime.
