  • Local were alarmed and believe the skulls were used for black magic

An investigation has been launched into an incident wherein a rag picker rummaging through a dump yard stumbled across a gunny bag filled with human skulls.

The incident was reported in Bhubaneswar city in the eastern Indian state of Odisha. The gunny bag contained over 15 human skulls and other skeletal remains, reported Hindustan Times.

The remains were found under a bridge in the Kalarahanga area, triggering panic among the residents. Officers, who launched a primary investigation into the incident, said little is known about the origin of the findings.

According to the officer in charge of the investigation, they received a call Wednesday afternoon about the gunny bag containing the human remains. "The ragpicker saw some skulls rolling out of the gunny bag and informed local people. Our team rushed to the spot and confiscated the human remains. The skulls looked very old," inspector-in-charge Sudhir Kumar Sahoo told Hindusthan Times.

Sahoo added that they suspect that one of the hospitals in the area may have dumped the remains from their morgues. There are two hospitals in the area, and the initial investigation is moving in this direction. "We would surely speak to the authorities of the two hospitals," said Sahoo.

There are also speculations that the remains were discarded at the dump yard after being dug up from somewhere else. "There are construction works going on in the area. Those might have been unearthed during the excavation of earth and later dumped here," another official was quoted by Odisha TV.

The grim discovery left the locals alarmed as some believe the skulls had something to do with black magic.

"We do not know who dumped these. But a glance at those suggests they had something to do with sorcery or black magic," a local man was quoted by the news outlet. Another person said this was the first time that human remains were found in the area.

However, reports added that this was not the first time that human skulls and skeletons were found in the state. In 2019, cops found human remains from a dumpster behind a school in the Nayapalli area. Similarly, more than 20 human skulls were earlier discovered under a bridge in 2014.
