A 15-year-old girl in India has been detained for allegedly strangling her 41-year-old mother to death after a heated argument over the teen's studies, police said.

The unidentified mother from Mumbai, the financial capital of India was found dead on July 30 at her apartment, where she lived with her husband and two kids. The woman's death was initially thought to be a suicide but an autopsy report later confirmed it to be a murder. The victim's teen daughter confessed to the murder and was detained Monday, Hindustan Times reported.

The parents of the teen girl wanted her to be a doctor. They reportedly forced the girl to join training classes to improve her chances of getting into medical school. The daughter, however, was not willing to fulfill her parent's wishes, which resulted in heated arguments with them, on different occasions.

The teenager even attempted to file a police complaint against her parents on July 27 for harassing her. The police then reportedly counseled the parents and sent them back home, The Times of India reported.

Three days later, the mother reportedly started the same argument with her daughter and took out a knife to threaten her. "The girl thought that the mother was going to kill her and she pushed her following which the mother got a head injury as she hit the corner of a cot," an investigating officer said, as per Hindustan Times.

The girl then allegedly strangled her mother with a karate belt making sure the victim died. She then dragged her mother's body into the bed and tried to pass off the incident as a suicide, police said. It is unclear if the girl's 7-year-old brother was at home during the incident.

After the alleged murder, the girl used her mother's phone to message her uncle and father disguised as the victim saying: "I tried everything. I quit."

The teen then called up her father complaining that the mother had locked herself in the room and was not opening her door. The father who was in the office informed the girl's uncle who lives nearby to check on them. The uncle who broke open the bedroom door found the victim lying dead on the bed.

“The police officials were doubtful about it being a suicide due to the way the body was lying. After interrogating all the family members, we suspected the daughter. After we took her into confidence, she narrated what happened,” Yogesh Gawade, a senior investigating officer told Hindustan Times.
