A 44-year-old man has been arrested after an attack at a Manchester, England, home left a 15-year-old boy dead and his mother injured Thursday, authorities said.

Greater Manchester police said the suspect, a Manchester resident, is believed to be known to the victims, The Guardian reported. The names of the suspect and both victims have not been released by authorities.

Police were called to the Miles Platting home by colleagues from the North West ambulance service Thursday evening after a "domestic incident," according to the outlet.

The teenage boy was found with stab wounds and was treated at the scene. He was rushed to a hospital, where he died around an hour later, police said.

The teen's mother, who is in her 40s, was also found with serious stab wounds. She was given treatment at the scene and is now in stable condition in the hospital.

“Last night’s attack has left a community reeling and a family coming to terms with what was an absolutely devastating incident for everyone involved,” said Greater Manchester Police Detective Chief Inspector Alicia Smith.

“A teenage boy who had his whole life ahead of him has tragically lost his life and not only is his mother grieving at the loss of her son, but she is also recovering from what will have been no doubt, hugely traumatic,” she continued. “Our thoughts remain very much with the family and we are absolutely committed to establishing what exactly happened last night.”

The detective chief inspector said the arrest of the suspect in the attack “is a huge step forward in getting the family the answers they need.”

Smith encouraged those who may have information or evidence related to the case to “report it online or via LiveChat at www.gmp.police.uk or alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

The investigation into the case is ongoing.

A neighbor described the 15-year-old victim as a "good kid," adding that "everyone around knew him," the BBC reported.

"When I found out it was crazy. I'm still trying to process it now," Ayomide Ladeji said.

Another neighbor said the woman lived in the house with her three kids. The resident added that they were a quiet family and that the children were polite.

"We would see the boy going to and from school. This is devastating," the unnamed neighbor said.
