KEY POINTS

  • Doctors found a large cluster of renal stones in the patient's unusually placed kidney
  • 50-year-old man's ectopic kidney was found near his abdomen instead of urinary tract
  • The surgery lasted three hours and was conducted using laparoscopy and endoscopy

Doctors at a hospital in India removed 156 kidney stones through a keyhole opening, in a 50-year-old patient. According to reports, this is the highest number of stones removed from a single patient in the country using this procedure.

The patient, identified as Basavaraj Madiwalar, underwent the procedure at Hyderabad's Preeti Urology & Kidney Hospital, in the southern state of Telangana. When Madiwalar, a school teacher by profession, experienced sudden pain near his abdomen, he got some tests done to determine what was causing it.

Doctors found a large cluster of renal stones, or kidney stones, in his ectopic kidney.

Madiwalar's was an unusual case of renal ectopia, a birth defect wherein the kidney is not located in the normal position, in the urinary tract. In Madiwalar's case, the ectopic kidney was located close to his abdomen.

"Though the presence of the kidney in an abnormal location is not the cause of the problem, removing stones from the kidney located abnormally was surely a challenging task," a statement from the hospital said, according to NDTV.

Dr. V Chandra Mohan, Urologist and Managing Director of the hospital, also spoke about the case, saying: "This patient might have been developing these stones for more than two years but never experienced any symptoms in the past. However, a sudden occurrence of pain forced him to undergo all necessary tests which revealed the presence of a large cluster of renal stones in the kidney. After assessing his health condition, we decided to take laparoscopy and endoscopy route to extract the stones, instead of resorting to major surgery."

The stones were removed following a procedure that lasted for three hours, The Times of India reported. The patient is said to be stable and has returned to his normal routine.

In 2015, doctors in China removed 420 kidney stones from a single patient during a two-hour surgery. The patient visited the doctor complaining of abdominal pain, and a subsequent CT scan revealed his left kidney was packed with stones.

In another bizarre case from 2009, a doctor in India removed 172,155 stones from a patient's left kidney during a three-hour surgery, according to Guiness World Records.

Both these were surgical procedures, however, were unlike the latest case which was conducted using laparoscopy and endoscopy.
