16 Effective Ways On How To Not Get Drunk While Drinking All Night
KEY POINTS
- Drink water throughout the night to keep blood alcohol levels below 0.06
- Eat food rich in protein and carbohydrates before drinking
- Salmon, avocado toast and Greek yogurt may help you not get drunk
On days such as National Drink Beer Day, the temptation to drink one of the most popular alcoholic beverages in the world might be too strong to fight. But this does not mean getting drunk and having regrets the next day. If you know how to not get drunk, you can celebrate, enjoy the whole night and still wake up in time for your nine-to-five.
Here are 16 effective ways to not get drunk while drinking all night:
1. Grab Unsweetened Yogurt
Yogurt is a good addition to your diet no matter the day, but this is one food item you should not skip on days you plan to drink. In particular, go for Greek yogurt, which is high in protein, fats and carbohydrates. You will feel full for longer because the protein digests slowly. This also happens to slow down your body's absorption of alcohol.
2. Have The Millennial Breakfast: Avocado Toast
Maybe the millennials were on to something when they favored avocado toast. This combination is a good breakfast before day drinking thanks to the heart-healthy fats in avocado and the amino acids in eggs that break down alcohol, shared Dr. Luiza Petre, a nutrition and weight-loss specialist and board-certified cardiologist. Avocados also provide potassium — essential for your electrolyte levels.
3. Add Active Dry Yeast
If you don't have time for a full meal, add a teaspoon of baker's yeast to your yogurt before drinking. Dr. Petre said this could decrease your BAC by 20% to 30%. "Yeast has enzymes (ADH alcohol dehydrogenases) that break down alcohol the same as your liver," she added. "The enzymes will be able to minimize the alcohol before it gets to your bloodstream. This prevents you from getting as inebriated as you would without the additional ADH."
4. Opt For Salmon
Salmon is a good food option before and after drinking, thanks to the amount of vitamin B12 in this fish. This nutrient decreases when you drink alcohol, so you need to replenish it to keep your nervous system and red blood cell production in check. Even before drinking, salmon provides protein and healthy fats that may slow alcohol absorption.
5. Go For A Bar Crawl
The walks in between bars give you a form of exercise that may help you last longer without getting drunk the whole night. This little cardio helps the blood flow to the liver, which detoxes your body faster, said Dr. Zehra Siddiqui, DO, medical director of Ryan Chelsea-Clinton, an independent health center treating underserved populations in New York City.
6. Keep Shots To A Minimum
Shots may be fun to do with friends, but the high alcohol concentration in them will get you drunk fast. If you must do shots, make sure they are not the majority of your drinks for the night.
7. Don't Forget Your Water
Hydration is essential when drinking alcohol. Remember: alcohol dehydrates your body. This is the reason for all the hangover symptoms you feel the next day. Even while drinking, adding water to your drink rotation will help you not get drunk. If you don't want to drink plain water, consider adding carbonated water to your cocktail or wine.
8. Choose Beer Over Cocktails
Because of the liquid volume of a glass of beer compared to a serving of cocktail, it gives you a lower alcohol per minute rate of consumption.
9. Or Drink Beer Later In The Night
Spending all night drinking without getting drunk will be more manageable if you start with the heavier liquors and switch to beers later. Again, this has something to do with the volume of the alcoholic beverage. Earlier in the night, you will be better able to pace yourself. Switch to beer when you start feeling the buzz to slow down your intoxication.
10. Try Non-Bubbly Beer
When celebrating National Drink Beer Day, the call for beer might be stronger than all other alcoholic beverages. However, the fizz may speed up alcohol absorption, which means it's time for you to try beers that are not carbonated.
11. Drink Beer From A Straight Glass
A feasibility study comparing the alcohol consumption using straight and curved glasses showed that you could drink beer slower if you were to drink from a straight glass.
12. For Mixed Drinks, Tall And Narrow Is the Key
If you are drinking at home or pouring your mixed drinks, a study suggested using tall, narrow glasses to avoid overpouring. You may also use premarked glasses to be more mindful of the amount of alcohol you are consuming for each drink. If you are outside and ordering drinks, consider if the bartender will grant your request to serve the drink in a tall and narrow glass.
13. Count Your Drinks
Not only is this a gauge of how well your senses are still functioning, but it also helps you be mindful of the number of drinks you consume. According to The International Alliance for Responsible Drinking, it takes roughly an hour to absorb one drink. Keep yourself to a drink an hour, and drink slower later in the night to avoid getting drunk.
14. Aim Just Below The BAC Sweet Spot
That is a blood alcohol concentration of 0.06. This green zone gives you the right buzz to enjoy social drinking without feeling the negative side effects of getting drunk. According to Very Well Mind, one standard American drink will produce between 0.02 to 0.04 BAC. Your body needs two hours to return to 0.00 BAC. With the right pacing, you can keep within the sweet spot all night.
15. Sip Slowly
Movie scenes where they chug alcoholic drinks very quickly will be a nightmare for your body. Aim for the opposite: sipping slowly. Fill the drinking table with conversations to prevent the sudden buildup of alcohol in your bloodstream.
16. Mix In Non-Alcoholic Drinks
Going out drinking all night does not mean drinking only alcoholic drinks. Adding non-alcoholic drinks in between will give your body a better chance of staying sober. Consider mocktails or non-alcoholic beers and spirits.
