A search is on for a 17-year-old boy who went missing after brutally hacking his paternal grandparents to death, allegedly on the orders of his mother.
Police arrested the teen's mother, hailing from the Indian city of Ludhiana on Wednesday. A manhunt for the accused, a grade 11 student, is on, reported Hindustan Times.
According to reports, the incident happened following a dispute over the family home. The deceased couple, 72-year-old Darshan Singh and 70-year-old Surinder Kaur, had been living with the teen and his parents until a few days ago.
However, they were forced to shift to another house after an argument broke out over sharing the home. The teen's parents wanted the elderly couple to part with their room in the house, which they refused.
On Wednesday, the elderly couple returned home to collect their clothes. "The accused argued with them, after which my sister-in-law asked her son to kill both his grandparents," said the victims' daughter and the teen's aunt Davinder Kaur.
The accused first locked up the elderly couple inside the house before attacking them. The neighbors, who rushed to help on hearing the victims' scream, said the boy was in such a rage that he thrashed his grandparents with a baseball bat before hacking them brutally on their faces.
"When we intervened, he threatened to kill us too," a neighbor was quoted by the news outlet. After the murders, the boy and his mother fled from the spot. However, the mother was later arrested.
At the time of the incident, the boy's father and elder sister were at work.
Meanwhile, the mother of the teen has raised allegations that her father-in-law had molested her. According to the woman, after arguments broke out over the family home, the deceased man molested her and recorded her inappropriate videos, reports added.
A senior police officer told The Times Of India that a property dispute case was registered two months ago. “The boy knew that his mother had accused her father-in-law of molesting her and it enraged him," the officer said.
In a similar incident, a 13-year-old boy and his brother were arrested for allegedly murdering their grandparents. The siblings, hailing from the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, resorted to the heinous crime so that they can own their grandparents' home. Police said the bodies of the elderly couple were found with their throat slits. An investigation revealed that the brothers had conflicting statements about the incident. During interrogation, they confessed to the crime.
