A 19-year-old Ohio man has been arrested for fatally stabbing his friend following a night out in Fort Wayne.
On Saturday, Shane R. Poe allegedly stabbed 19-year-old Markese Newman of Findley, multiple times. Around 8:20 p.m., first responders were called to the intersection of Schwartz and Eby roads, northeast of Fort Wayne on reports of a stabbing.
Police found Newman laying outside a vehicle and bleeding heavily from apparent stab wounds.
Poe confessed to stabbing his friend in front of the officers after they arrived. After receiving treatment for a knife wound on his hand, he was arrested and taken in for further questioning, reported The Journal Gazette.
Newman, on the other hand, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, where he succumbed to injuries Sunday.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Poe told investigators during an interview that he and Newman were friends and had come to Fort Wayne for a concert. He said they had been drinking brandy. Poe was driving his girlfriend’s car and was on their way back to Ohio when Newman allegedly became “irate” and the duo began fighting inside the car, reported WANE.
Poe then showed the police where Newman had struck him. Officers noted that Poe’s right eye was swollen from a hit.
As the fighting between the two friends intensified, Poe said he pulled the car over multiple times as Newman began throwing items from the vehicle, as per the affidavit. Poe finally pulled over at the intersection of Schwartz and Eby roads when he thought Newman had thrown his phone out of the car, reported the Gazette.
Poe then grabbed a steak knife from the door panel of the car and left the vehicle. He told Investigators, that when he went to the rear of the car, Newman started throwing punches at him. He allegedly warned Newman he had a knife but the latter kept up with his assault.
As the victim continued his assault, Poe stabbed him. According to the affidavit, Poe told officers that he does not remember how many times he stabbed Newman.
Poe faces preliminary charge of felony aggravated battery.
According to the Allen County Coroner’s Office, Newman died of multiple stab wounds and his death was ruled a homicide.
