190,000 Treadmills Are Being Recalled; Is Yours Included?

A company is recalling more than 190,000 of its treadmills because of a possible fall hazard. There have been hundreds of reports of the issue and dozens of reports of injuries.

The problem with the recalled Horizon Fitness folding treadmills is that they can "unexpectedly accelerate, change speed or stop without user input," according to the announcement on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website. This may then pose a fall hazard to the users.

So far, the company has received 874 reports of the treadmills "unexpectedly" stopping or changing their speed in the U.S. Moreover, there have been 71 reports of injuries, such as bruises and broken bones, in connection with the issue.

In Canada, where about 7,000 units of the treadmills are also being recalled, there have also been eight reports of the treadmills suddenly changing speed and six reports of injuries.

The recall affects the Horizon T101-05 folding treadmills with a 55-inch-long and 20-inch-wide running area as well as a red LED display. The affected serial numbers for units with the model name "T101-05 China" begin with TM734, while the affected serial numbers of the units with the model name "T101-05 Vietnam" begin with TM486.

The serial number and model name can be found on the metal frame close to the power switch, the CPSC noted.

"Only Horizon Fitness T101-05 folding treadmills are included in this recall," the announcement said, adding that only the noted serial numbers are affected by the issuance.

The recalled treadmills were sold at Dick's Sporting Goods and Johnson Fitness & Wellness stores nationwide. They were also sold online via various websites including Amazon.com from March 2018 to October 2022.

Those who find that their units are affected by the recall are being advised to stop using them. Instead, they should contact the company to receive the free USB with the necessary software update to be installed on the treadmills. Alternatively, they may also download the update online, but they will need to have a USB stick for it.

Customers may request the software update here. They will be required to provide certain pieces of information, such as the serial number of the unit and what the display panel looks like.
