Two children in India were killed when a 27-year-old man allegedly crashed his relative's new BMW into another vehicle, and sent it ramming into a group of homeless people sleeping under an overpass.

Eight people were also injured in the accident that took place in the city of Delhi. The police said Thursday an arrest was made in connection to the incident.

The man driving the BMW was identified as Sahil Narang. He and his uncle were returning from the airport around 4.30 am on June 10 when he collided into another car, driven by 18-year-old Yatin Sharma, according to Hindustan Times.

“Narang has revealed that the BMW car was newly purchased, so he was testing the speed and control of the car. During this course, he met with an accident,” police officer, Esha Pandey, said.

Due to the impact of the collision, the car driven by Sharma skidded and hit a concrete footpath. The car then “flipped onto people sleeping on it. Sharma and his friends were injured and trapped inside their damaged car. Local residents rescued occupants,” a police officer said, while quoting a complaint filed by Sharma.

Apart from the four injured occupants, four other homeless people were also injured. Two children, 6-year-old Roshni and her brother, 10-year-old Amir, died in the accident.

Mohammad Islam, the children's grandfather, told The Times of India there were more than 30 homeless people sleeping under the overpass that day. He said the car driven by Sharma had first injured a couple and their son before striking the deceased victims.

“Amir and Roshni were sleeping next to each other. The car fell on Amir whereas Roshni was dragged by the car,” he told the outlet.

Amir and Roshni’s sibling was also trapped under the vehicle, but was rescued by their mother.

After colliding with the other car, Narang allegedly fled the scene in the BMW. The police said he escaped so quickly that neither Sharma nor the witnesses at the scene could identify the vehicle’s model. They could only report seeing a black car speeding away.

Pandey said they went through footage from CCTV cameras installed in the area to identify the black car that caused the tragic incident.

She noted they managed to identify the BMW’s owner, following which the cops found out Narang was driving the car, and tracked him down. They also seized the car, which was given for repairs.

The bereaved family said they had been sleeping under the overpass since 2017.

“We feel suffocated inside shelter homes. We have spent our whole life on the road, but this is the first time that such an accident has happened to us,” Islam told The Times of India.

A 65-year-old homeless man, who was also sleeping under the overpass, told the outlet, “The car hit the people sleeping next to me ... We were all numb after losing the children.”
