A nurse in India was arrested after she was caught on camera brutally beating up a 2-month-old baby inside a hospital.

The woman, identified as 24-year-old Somayya, was taken into custody Thursday. The police said the accused, who used to get drunk during the job, was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol when she attacked the baby, media outlet The Hindu reported.

The victim's father, from the state of Uttar Pradesh, told the local media his wife delivered twins in May, but one of their sons, Ahaan, fell sick on July 16. He had taken the baby to a local hospital, where the doctors asked him to take him to Delhi for better treatment.

On July 18, the father – identified as 28-year-old Sabeeb – admitted his son to Care New Born & Child Hospital in Delhi. Sabeeb said he visited the child daily in the hospital, and on July 24, the doctors informed him the child had suffered some injuries. At the hospital, he found his son's hand was fractured and his face was swollen, The Hindu reported.

Sabeed began questioning the hospital staff, but the doctors allegedly refused to tell him how the incident happened. He also threatened to approach the police, and later managed to look at the CCTV footage of the room where his son was admitted. In the footage, a nurse can reportedly be seen thrashing the baby. The victim's father alleged the hospital staff threatened him not to reveal the incident to anyone.

The baby's father then approached the police earlier this week, and filed a complaint, local media reported. The accused was charged under Sections 325 (punishment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant Sections of the Juvenile Justice Act on Wednesday.

An investigation is currently underway into the incident.

Last year, a newborn baby died at a hospital in the southern city of Hyderabad after the child slipped from the hands of a nurse and fell on the floor in a private hospital. The family protested outside the hospital at the time, demanding justice and action against the employee. Local media said the woman, who dropped the baby, was 23 years old.
