A mother was arrested after two of her children tested positive for drugs during a toxicology screening. The incident took place in South Carolina on Sunday (May 10).

The accused, identified as 24-year-old Jacquelyn Nicole Page, of Rock Hill, was arrested and charged after her children tested positive for drugs during a mandated toxicology screening.

According to Trent Faris, a spokesman for the York County Sheriff’s Office, the screening was mandated by South Carolina officials during an investigation conducted by S.C. Department of Social Services.

The woman’s children, aged 3 and 6 months old, tested positive for meth and heroin after which, detectives initiated an investigation. Following the incident, Page was arrested and charged.

Meanwhile, the children were placed in the custody of family members.

The sheriff’s office said they have a team of investigators that handle child endangerment cases. Kevin Brackett, 16th Circuit solicitor, whose office prosecutes criminal cases against parents charged with narcotics use, said the safety of the children was their top priority.

Page was charged with child abuse and child neglect. If found guilty, she could face up to 10 years in prison for each of the charges. She was being held at York County Detention Center and her bail was set at $10,000.

The case was still under investigation. No further information was available at the time.

In a similar incident, a mother was arrested after her 11-month-old daughter was found under the influence of methamphetamine. The incident took place at San Bernardino, California, in March. The accused, identified as 39-year-old Lisa Galindo, was apprehended by a specialized unit following an investigation. She was charged with willful child endangerment for failing to protect her child. Meanwhile, the infant was taken into the custody of Children and Family Services and was expected to recover.

In another incident, a seven-month-old infant was hospitalized after suffering from a possible drug overdose in March. The grandmother of the child had taken the child to the hospital after noticing "abnormal behavior”. Following this, search warrants were issued to two homes during which officials discovered narcotics and drug paraphernalia. Three people, including the baby’s mother and grandmother, were taken into custody and charged with child endangerment. The infant’s mother was facing additional charges for possession of narcotics. The baby was expected to recover.
