2-Year-Old Child Mauled By Dogs After Being Abandoned By Parents On Road
A 2-year-old girl in India was attacked by a pack of dogs after she was allegedly abandoned by her parents near a school.
The incident occurred in Jabalpur, a city in the central state of Madhya Pradesh. Authorities said the dogs mauled the girl after her parents left her.
The girl was sitting on the road near the school when she was attacked. Some students nearby saw the child surrounded by dogs, and rushed to help her. They saw that she had injuries on her face, and informed the police immediately, the Times of India reported.
The police who arrived at the scene took the child to Victoria Hospital for treatment. They then launched a formal complaint and started looking for the girl's parents. It remains unclear as to when and why the parents abandoned the child. The number of dogs involved in the attack was also not revealed.
An investigation is underway into the incident.
In a recent incident, a pack of stray dogs attacked and killed a minor girl while she was returning home from her family's field. The attack took place in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The 13-year-old was in her family's agriculture field beside a canal when the dogs attacked her. Locals saw the dogs approaching the girl, but were unable to save her.
The victim, who was identified as Neha Maurya, suffered serious injuries and died at the scene. Authorities have launched an investigation into the attack. The number of dogs involved in the incident was not revealed. Forest range officer Satyendra Chaudhary said that it is likely that the dogs attacked the girl because they were hungry.
In another case last year, a girl was mauled to death by street dogs while she was playing outside her house in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The 4-year-old girl was attacked by least four dogs, the police said. People in the area rushed to rescue the girl and chased the dogs away. The girl suffered serious injuries to her neck and hands.
India’s stray dog population has grown over the years, and is currently estimated to be between 35–40 million. According to a Guardian report in October 2020, the country has around 20,000 rabies deaths a year, mostly caused by stray dog bites.
