2011 LA Auto Show: 2013 Ford Mustang and Other Catchy Cars [Slideshow]
Although the L.A. Auto Show truly gets underway on Friday Nov. 18, the press has only been able to report on the 2011 show and its newest entrants of future cars on Nov. 16 and the 17. Chevrolet, Chrysler, Ford, Dodge, Honda, Volkswagen, Audi and BMW are just a handful of manufacturers that have made a splash thus far for what cameras and reporters have been mandated to glimpse.
Nevertheless, no one has made more of a splash than Ford-more specifically the Ford Mustang. The Mustang's most recent generations of models, the fifth generation, which has been in production since 2005, has undergone many changes, outside and inside, just as much, if not more, than any other model of car to date.
Ford has debuted three models of the Mustang--the standard Mustang GT, the Mustang Boss 302, and the Shelby GT 500--signaling Ford's increasing competitiveness with Chevrolet and Chrysler in the ever-evolving muscle-car landscape.
Out of the three models, though, the Shelby GT 500 packs the most punch. The new model will sport a 5.8-liter supercharged V8 engine, rated at 650hp and 600 lb-ft of torque, which are 100hp and 90 lb-ft of torque more than its 2012 counterpart. This will allow the car to reach a top speed of 200 mph. The 2013 Shelby GT 500 also has an upgraded cooling system. Like the current GT500, 19-inch wheels are standard up front and 20-inches are in the back.
How successful the 2013 line of Ford Mustangs will be remains to be seen. More futuristic-looking muscle cars, with specs just as good as the Mustang's, could get popular.
