KEY POINTS

  • "Little Women," "Veep" completely shut out of the nominations
  • Robert De Niro, Adam Sander failed to get Best Actor nods
  • "Bombshell,""The Irishman," "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" get four nominations each

The Awards season is in full swing as the nominations for the 2020 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards have finally been announced. Without any guesses, it was Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” and Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” that led the nominations in 4 categories each.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Scorsese’s epic crime drama received four nominations, including Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Al Pacino and Joe Pesci have been nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category. But one of the biggest snubs came in the person of Robert De Niro who was not included in the group of actors nominated for Best Actor.

De Niro’s exclusion came a couple of days after he was not nominated in the same category at the Golden Globes. But he still has a chance to nab the prestigious trophy at the 2020 Critics’ Choice Awards. Nevertheless, the esteemed actor will go home with an award at the SAG Awards since he will be receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award by Leonardo DiCaprio.

The other names included in the category are Joaquin Phoenix, Christian Bale, DiCaprio, Taron Egerton and Adam Driver.

But the biggest snub of the day came when Saoirse Ronan's name was nowhere to be seen in the Best Actress category. The actress, who has been nominated for Critics Choice and a Golden Globe, could not manage to make an impact on the jury members of SAG-AFTRA. The Academy Award-nominated star is considered to be one of the top contenders to get an Acting nod at the Academy Awards in 2020.

The actresses battling it out for the award are Cynthia Erivo, Scarlett Johansson, Charlize Theron, Renée Zellweger and Lupita Nyong’O.

Not just Ronan, Florence Pugh was also not nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category. Pugh has garnered universal acclaim in the film directed by Greta Gerwig and has been one of the frontrunners for this award in almost every nomination list that has come out till now.

With stars like Ronan, Pugh, Emma Watson, Meryl Streep and Timothée Chalamet, the fans were quite baffled to see that “Little Women” did not score a single acting nod.

Another major snub in the Best Actress category came in the person of Awkwafina. The 31-year-old actress, who showed her impeccable acting skills in “The Farewell,” was overlooked by SAG.

Other notable snubs (Movies) – Antonio Banderas (Best Actor), Eddie Murphy (Best Actor), Cast of “Knives Out” (Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture), Adam Sandler (Best Actor).

On the Television side, Julia Louis Dreyfus’ hit-TV series “Veep” was completely shut out of the nominations. The show did not receive any nomination and Dreyfus was not given a chance to create history at the SAG awards. If she would have been nominated for the award, Dreyfus would have tied first with Edie Falco for the most number of nominations (22) in the history of SAG Awards (movies and TV).

Sandra Oh was also not considered for the Best Actress in a Drama Series award. The “Killing Eve” star won the award in 2018 but is struggling to find a nod this awards season.

Other notable snubs (TV) – Cast of “The Morning Show” (Outstanding Cast in Drama Series), “Succession” (All categories).

The star-studded ceremony will take on Jan. 19 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
